The Tampa VA recently held a ribbon cutting ceremony for the new Bed Tower.

Wednesday, February 8, 2023
January 21, Tampa VA hosted the ribbon cutting on the new Bed Tower constructed on its main hospital’s campus. The building that began in 2018 spans over 245,000 square-feet and features 96 private patient rooms and 40 intensive care unit beds.

The state-of-the-art Bed Tower includes a healing garden and a variety of support spaces. Attendees at the ceremony included construction partners from the U.S. Corps of Engineers, Turner Construction, Page Construction, Congressional representatives and Veteran Service Organizations.

“There will be 96 private med surge beds and 40 ICU beds. Why do I point out private? It’s been a long time coming, but we’re finally going to take that next step and give our Veterans that dignity and that privacy that they’re owed by having a private room and not being in a room with another Veteran in our two-person rooms and four-person rooms. You know those curtains aren’t very private,” said Mr. David Dunning,

“This is the first installment and now we have to go back after this to other rooms in our old bed tower and make them private rooms,” Mr. Dunning said.

Healing and whole health modalities were major inspirations for the construction of the facility. Patients can draw on the benefits of green space, the relaxation garden and aesthetics that enhance health, recovery and healing.

On the same day of the Bed Tower’s official ribbon cutting, the Veterans’ Canteen Service also commemorated its grand opening inside the new Bed Tower with a ceremony attended by members of Tampa VA’s Executive Leadership Team and other industry partners. Opening the new Veterans Canteen Service at the same time was no coincidence.

“We’re excited that this is a re-imagination of VCS with keeping the store, café and coffee shop all in one space in the new Bed Tower,” said Josh Baker, Veterans Canteen Chief.

“Veterans, visitors, caregivers and staff can visit the VCS in one stop,” said Baker. “This is a huge benefit to the visitors and staff. The VCS is located in the Bed Tower’s main area, which speaks to how important this is to boost morale,” Baker said. “This is our chance to give better care.”

“They can practice whole health. This space gives them a chance to regroup and gain peace of mind,” said Baker.
